Guns and Firearms

Any home or visit where firearms are present needs a clear plan: locked storage, separated ammunition, and age-appropriate conversations with children and other adults.

Store guns and ammunition safely

• Store guns unloaded, locked, and out of children’s reach and sight.
• Store ammunition locked separately.
• Keep keys and combinations secure.
• When a gun is out of the safe, keep it in your direct line of sight.
• Use effective, child-resistant gun locks on all firearms.
• If a visitor stores a gun in a bag or vehicle, offer a locked place while they are in your home.
• Avoid leaving firearms on nightstands, tables, or anywhere a child can access them.

Talk to kids and caregivers

• Explain that real guns are not like toys or what kids see in games and shows.
• Teach: if you see a gun, do not touch it—leave the area and tell an adult immediately.
• Ask grandparents and the parents of friends how they secure firearms before play dates and sleepovers.

Dispose of guns you no longer need

• If you choose to remove firearms from your home, ask local law enforcement about lawful surrender or buyback options in your community.
